Our Volunteers

As a private, non-profit agency, Veterans Outreach Center relies heavily on the dedicated involvement of volunteers to succeed in its mission. Beyond serving as unpaid staff, volunteers act as liaisons between the Center and the community. Their presence not only helps to expand the services that can be offered, but also brings fresh energy and enthusiasm to the staff and clients.

More than 100 individuals of all generations volunteered their time, talents, and resources to the Veterans Outreach Center in 2011. Logging in over 3350 hours, our volunteers are one of our most valuable assets. Every day they make significant contributions by positively impacting the lives of those who have given so much.

2011 Volunteer of the Year - Susan Waud

"As individuals, we all have different life or work experiences and we have traveled diverse paths . But as a volunteer, we share one very strong common bond – a passion for a cause or an organization. We all want to give something of ourselves in hopes of making a difference. Here at VOC, volunteering is a way to show our support and our appreciation to the veterans and their families for the service they have given to their country and to us.

Volunteering for any organization has its rewards but volunteering at Veterans Outreach Center is an extraordinary experience. I began volunteering in hopes of “giving something back” and I can honestly say I have received so much more than I have given. Each day I’m here is more gratifying than the day before. Besides having made some wonderful friendships with staff and co-volunteers, I am rewarded each day by the veterans we serve.

I had the distinction of receiving the “Volunteer of the Year” award in November. It was truly an honor and one that is very much appreciated. But as all volunteers can tell you our true reward comes not from the accolades but from that veteran who gives us a smile or says “have a good day.”

In closing let me say, VOC is an exciting place to be right now. We are expanding our supportive services enabling us to provide services to more and more veterans. As these programs grow, more volunteer opportunities open up – requiring us to increase our volunteer base. Ask any of our volunteers – they will tell you this is a great place to volunteer. I invite you to come join our team."
